A full dome scan can be completed in under a minute. Huge sites which would previously have taken multiple people days to survey can now be done in a matter of hours by one. The fidelity of the scans means no detail is missed, so inconvenient site revisits become far less common. All of this frees up hours from your work week.![]()

The BLK also uses a full HDR imaging system, recording panoramic imagery alongside the point cloud, so your data arrives ready to interpret. Colourised scans make the data easier to understand, easier to share with clients, and simpler to spot details that are hard to see in the point cloud.![]()

Field360 on a tablet lets you register scans in the field and share them directly with clients using Leica Geocloud. Files can also be shared in industry-standard E57 and RCP formats for use in Autodesk and other design and draughting software packages.![]()

Our half day course takes operatives from theory to practice in one morning. We start with the fundamentals of electromagnetic detection and how buried services radiate signals. From there, operatives are shown the functions of the CAT, and how to use it correctly. We will also emphasise the importance of using a genny, making sure everyone is aware of why a service may not be detectable without one.![]()

Operatives are then given the opportunity to put what they have learnt into practice, tracing and locating services on live ground, under the guidance of one of our experienced instructors. By the end of the course, they leave with the confidence to use the equipment effectively on site, with the knowledge on how to avoid costly mistakes and dangerous cable strikes.![]()

● What is a CAT and Genny?![]()
The Radiodetection Cable Avoiding Tool (CAT) and Genny transmitters have been the cornerstone of underground utility detection for decades, trusted across the industry to locate a wide range of buried services. Designed for speed and simplicity, they offer a straightforward learning curve and an intuitive layout which is easy to pick up on site.![]()

● How does a CAT work?![]()
A CAT works by detecting electromagnetic signals emitted from metallic objects. This means that although they excel at detecting metallic objects, non-metallic objects are essentially undetectable.![]()

● How would you detect non-metallic services?![]()
In order to detect non-metallic services, you would have to either use a sonde or a GPR.![]()

● What is a sonde?![]()
A sonde is a device which is used to detect plastic pipes and other non-metallic services, that a CAT and Genny can't find on their own.![]()

● How would you use a sonde?![]()
The sonde is attached to a drain rod or cobra reel, and inserted into a buried pipe. The signal emitted from the sonde as it travels down the pipe can then be traced from the surface using the CAT. This method is also useful for locating blockages and connections as the point at which it hits an object can be accurately detected from the surface.![]()

● How would you detect the whole length of a plastic pipe?![]()
If you need to detect the whole length of a plastic pipe, or any other non-metallic services, you could use a Radiodetection FlexiTrace. This is a tool which allows you to directly connect your Genny to the reel, meaning that the whole length of the service will be detectable, as well as the sonde.![]()

● What is a GPR?![]()
Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) is different altogether, it takes a non-invasive approach and scans the ground, sending radar pulses to build a picture of what lies below. GPR units can cover large areas very quickly, as the device is wheeled across the surface.![]()

● What does a GPR detect?![]()
Unlike CAT and Gennys, GPR is not limited to detecting exclusively metallic objects and can detect services of any material, making it an excellent solution in areas where traditional locating methods aren't effective.![]()

● What's the catch?![]()
GPR comes in with a higher entry cost and steeper learning curve than the previously mentioned detection methods, although it earns its place as a high end option because it can find services where nothing else can.![]()

● Who would use a GPR?![]()
GPR remains closely associated with surveyors and specialist utility locators, though smaller, more affordable units, along with the option to hire the equipment, are increasingly putting the technology within reach of others.![]()
